Reds Want Mignolet Deal Before Christmas

Monday, Dec. 14

According to the Daily Mirror's David Maddock, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will show his faith in the 27-year-old shot stopper by handing him a new and improved contract, and the club hopes to complete the extension soon.

Talks have reportedly been ongoing for weeks and haven't slowed in the wake of Mignolet's howler against West Bromwich Albion, where he left his line early on a corner kick that led to a goal.

Per Maddock, Klopp has asked fans not to take their frustrations out on the stopper but rather on him, as he instructed Mignolet to leave his line for crosses. A new contract would underline Klopp's ongoing support of the player.

Mignolet moved to Anfield from Sunderland in 2013 and has been the Reds' starter for the majority of matches since then, but his consistency has been an issue.

The Belgium international has flashed his incredible talent as a pure shot-stopper, but he has also committed his fair share of mistakes, particularly in aerial battles.

Per Squawka Football, the 2015-16 campaign has been no exception:

ESPN FC's Tony Evans certainly isn't a fan of Mignolet, and he wonders why the club still hasn't brought in a replacement:

But finding a quality, experienced Premier League goalkeeper who would be an upgrade over Mignolet isn't as easy as it sounds. The position isn't exactly overflowing with talent, and despite his faults, Mignolet remains one of the best 'keepers on his line in the country.

It's telling both Klopp and former manager Brendan Rodgers handed him the starting position over summer acquisition Adam Bogdan, who was supposed to provide the necessary competition during the 2015-16 campaign.

Per OptaJoe, Mignolet had recorded more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League in 2015 just two months ago, so perhaps his recent struggles are a little overblown.
