Trey Williams Released by Patriots: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsDec 10, 2015

One week after claiming Trey Williams off waivers from the Dallas Cowboys, the New England Patriots have released the running back.

Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston tweeted news of the Patriots' decision regarding Williams.

The Patriots have been searching for consistency in the running game all season. They are 10-2 despite ranking 24th in the NFL in yards per attempt and 28th in rushing yards per game.

Williams, who was undrafted out of Texas A&M and has yet to get a single NFL carry, may not have improved those numbers due to his lack of experience, but Kevin Duffy of MassLive.com did highlight some intriguing attributes for the young running back:

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is unpredictable when it comes to deploying running backs. The legend of Jonas Gray was born last year against Indianapolis, driving fantasy owners wild before falling off the face of the Earth after that game.

Depth at running back is something the Patriots are still searching for with Dion Lewis suffering a torn ACL in Week 9 against Washington. LeGarrette Blount is the featured running back for the Patriots, but his lack of ability in the passing game does limit the wrinkles in New England's offense.

Williams showed enough to the Patriots' scouts that they felt he was worthy of a shot. He never got a chance to showcase his skills, but the market for running backs is so unpredictable that it likely won't take long for him to find a new home and get another opportunity.
