New Day Needs Long-Term Rivals to Legitimize WWE Tag Title Reign

Sebastian MaldonadoDec 10, 2015

The New Day has never been more dominant, remaining tag team champions for over four months.

The trio of Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods have held their titles with a stranglehold, having survived the veteran threat of The Dudley Boyz at Hell in a Cell.

However, they don't have long-term rivals chasing them. Not one team has chased them with the exception of The Dudley Boyz. Ironically enough, WWE Creative might have put those building blocks in place.

November's Survivor Series saw The New Day team with King Barrett and Sheamus. They took on The Usos, The Lucha Dragons and Ryback. Both The Usos and The Lucha Dragons started to go after The New Day and their tag team titles. Their team won their Survivor Series bout, and both tag teams have hounded The New Day since.

This brings us to December 13 at WWE TLC, where all three teams will vie for those tag titles in a Triple Threat ladder match. The stakes couldn't be any higher for The New Day, as it could lose the titles without being pinned.

The New Day needs to win, but what happens after must be integral to their reign as champions, which means feuding with either tag team or both for a lengthy period of time.

The New Day needs long-term rivals to legitimize its reign as tag team champions. The answers could be The Usos and The Lucha Dragons.

The Usos are the more experienced tag team of the two challengers. The brothers duo of Jimmy and Jey Uso have established themselves as a tag team force, doing battle with The Wyatt Family's Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. They have the experience as former tag team champions and can be formidable on the microphone as well as having great tag team chemistry.

The Lucha Dragons are no slouches, either. The team of Kalisto and Sin Cara were NXT Tag Team champions before being called up to the main roster on the Raw after WrestleMania 31. They've made their presence known through their high-flying moves and willingness to compete at a moment's notice.

Both teams gain by being in the title hunt. The New Day reaps the rewards for having opponents to bounce around. It's the perfect heel team to hold those titles. Who doesn't want to see it lose this Sunday at TLC?

The possibility of this occurring could be remarkable. Frankly, this could turn out to be the second coming of a fully revitalized tag team division we've been waiting for.

Tag teams are only as good as their competition. The New Day could be taken to new heights if its feuds with The Usos and The Lucha Dragons last more than just a month.

If anyone knows how feuds can benefit tag teams, it's The Dudley Boyz.

The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian waged many wars that fans still discuss to this day. Their battles stand the test of time, and theirs started nearly two decades ago.

The Dudley Boyz also had to contend with other teams during their WWE run, including the team of Ric Flair & Batista as well as Kane and Rob Van Dam. Even though they lost on some occasions, The Dudley Boyz are still revered for establishing WWE's tag team division.

The New Day has the teams to feud with that can fill those voids. It falls on them and WWE Creative to give the trio the ball to run with. If so, The New Day can have those same wars with The Usos and The Lucha Dragons that The Dudleyz had with The Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian.

The New Day needs long-term rivals to legitimize its tag team title reign. Only time will tell if The Usos and/or The Lucha Dragons rise to the occasion.
