Herm Edwards Goes Ballistic over LeSean McCoy's NSFW Comments on Chip Kelly

Dan CarsonDec 9, 2015

There are certain things Herm Edwards will not stand for.

He's gone on the record as a staunch advocate of not losing, and he tends to talk about the game of football like it's a giant that might come down from the mountains and start flattening cities if its unspoken rules aren't observed.

This is all to say, Edwards is a dyed-in-the-wool traditionalist. In his world, you shut your mouth when you're talking to the media—which helps explain the former head coach's tirade on Wednesday's NFL Live on ESPN.

Joined by Trey Wingo, Greg Schiano and Darren Woodson, Edwards remained cool and collected until the show's discussion turned to the recent comments made by LeSean McCoy and DeMarco Murray.

What appeared to tick off Edwards the most were the candid remarks offered by McCoy, who told reporters Wednesday that he won't talk to or shake hands with Chip Kelly, his former head coach, when he returns to Philadelphia to play the Eagles on Sunday. McCoy's remarks, per WBKW's Joe Buscaglia:

This heresy Edwards could not abide, and he let his fellow NFL Live panelists know it, per the Miami New Times' Ryan Yousefi:

"This ain't professional football, man. It ain't about you," Edwards said. "It's not about you anymore. The players think it's all about them. It ain't about them. It's about the game of football, man."

This is vintage Edwards, and you have to credit Schiano and company for holding it together. Woodson tried to offer a counterpoint but then wisely decided to just let Edwards cook:

This is all you can do in that situation.

Edwards is going to Edward, and he'll finish when he's done and the good name of the game has been restored.

Furthermore, I fully expect Edwards to show up at McCoy's house this week with a Vince Lombardi biography and a look on his face that says, "Boy, you need Football Jesus."

Dan is on Twitter. Football Jesus is like the televangelist version of Touchdown Jesus.
