Why the Seahawks can cover the spread
The Seahawks picked up their fifth win in their last six games last week with a 38-7 mugging of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Seattle led 21-0 at the half and 35-0 before allowing the Vikes' only score of the day on a kickoff return. On the afternoon the Seahawks outgained Minnesota by a lopsided 433-125 margin, won time of possession by 10 minutes and easily covered as field-goal favorites on the road.
Two weeks ago Seattle exploded late on Pittsburgh in a 39-30 victory, and just before that they beat San Francisco 29-13. So the Seahawks are looking a lot more like Super Bowl contenders than they did earlier this season.
Why the Ravens can cover the spread
Injury-depleted Baltimore is now 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS without quarterback Joe Flacco, after losing at Miami last week 15-13 but covering as a three-point dog. The Ravens fell down 15-0, rallied to within two points with 10 minutes to go, but later missed a 55-yard field goal and couldn't get the ball back.
On the day Baltimore outgained Miami 375-219 and held the ball for over 38 minutes, but a Matt Schaub pick-six in the second quarter proved costly. The Ravens have now outgained three of their last four opponents by at least 139 yards, going 2-1-1 ATS in the process.
Smart pick
NFL home dogs took a big dip last week, going 0-7 SU and 1-6 ATS. However, they're still 31-27 ATS on the season. And last week's win over Minnesota might be a little too fresh in oddsmakers' minds. The smart money here backs Baltimore.
