Riley to Have Surgery
Friday, Dec. 4
Redskins head coach Jay Gruden announced Friday that Riley will have surgery on his foot that will sideline him for three to six weeks. Per the Washington Post's Mike Jones, the injury is to the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.
Riley initially injured the foot in practice Thursday, according to ESPN's John Keim, and underwent an MRI to deduce its severity. He told Redskins.com's Andrew Walker that he didn't think it was serious.
It's a tough pill to swallow for Redskins defensive coordinator Joe Barry, who told the Washington Post's Liz Clarke:
Riley ranks third among linebackers on the Redskins with 44 total tackles this season. The team has taken over first place in the NFC East after defeating the New York Giants during Week 12.
According to Jones, the Redskins are preparing as if Mason Foster will start at inside linebacker, because Keenan Robinson, who ranks second among linebackers in tackles, is dealing with a shoulder issue. Foster has appeared in eight games this season, not starting any while recording just two assisted tackles.
With the Redskins now holding their own destiny in the NFC East, seeing their linebacking corps going down has to be an alarming sight.
Luckily for them, they aren't playing the most high-powered of offenses over the final five weeks of the season, with matchups against the Dallas Cowboys twice, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills. Apart from the Eagles, each team ranks in the bottom half of the league in total offense.
