The 29-year-old joined the Blues from Bolton Wanderers in 2012 and swiftly struck a strong partnership with club legend John Terry, guiding the team to trophies in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and last year's Premier League title.

He made last year's PFA Premier League Team of the Year, as Chelsea's defence conceded the least goals in England's top division for the second consecutive campaign.

This season, he has started nine Premier League matches, but the Blues have struggled to build any momentum in the first half of the campaign, per WhoScored.com

Naturally, plenty of fans and pundits took to Twitter to congratulate Cahill on his new deal. Lee Parker of Chelsea TV joined in:

Sam Matterface of talkSPORT noted the Blues have a rule in place that precludes them from handing players over 30 years old long-term extensions, but they managed to come to an agreement with Cahill just in time:

With Terry swiftly approaching the end of his career, it was vital for Chelsea to ensure Cahill remains a part of their defence for years to come.

His experience and veteran leadership will be key as the club moves on from Terry and introduces a new partner for Cahill, most likely talented youngster Kurt Zouma.
