Green Bay Packers Week 13 Stock Report

Michelle BrutonDec 1, 2015

Spoiler alert: The Green Bay Packers' stock report heading into Week 13 is not trending upward.

The Week 12 loss to the Chicago Bears was a total team failure, but greater blame must fall on the offense, which literally allowed the win to slip through its fingers.

Multiple drops by the wide receivers combined with some poor throws from Aaron Rodgers were the biggest contributors to the loss, in addition to Eddie Lacy's fumble, and this week's stock reports reflects that.

Let's break down who's rising and falling heading into the crucial Week 13 matchup against the Detroit Lions.

Falling: WR Davante Adams

1 of 5

The drop-off that Davante Adams has experienced in his second season with the Packers has been shocking to observe.

Adams' route running has become sloppy. He is struggling to gain separation, and he has multiple drops on the season.

Though Pro Football Focus credits Adams with seven drops on the season, the receiver has clearly had many more, including at least three in the loss to Chicago.

Not only are balls bouncing off Adams' hands, but the drops are costly; Aaron Rodgers' interception was the direct result of Adams stopping short on his route, at which point Tracy Porter got his hands on the ball.

Then, as Rodgers attempted a game-winning touchdown pass, Adams stepped in front of a pass intended for Randall Cobb.

Needless to say, the pressure is on against Detroit for Adams to turn things around and limit his mental mistakes. He's not just failing to help the offense; in many cases, he's downright hurt the team with drops and missteps.

That's not what the Packers expected from their No. 2 receiver this year.

Rising: CB Quinten Rollins

2 of 5

Rookie cornerback Quinten Rollins made the most of his opportunities against the Bears, as defensive back Micah Hyde was out with an injury and Damarious Randall left the action with a knee injury.

Though Rollins has only played 99 snaps total this season, per Pro Football Focus, he saw 28 in Week 12.

When the Packers went with the blitz, Rollins was flying off the corner and able to deliver significant pressure on Jay Cutler. He finished the game with a sack and a quarterback hit, a pass defensed and two tackles for loss.

Rollins earned the second-highest grade of the game among all defensive players by Pro Football Focus for his efforts.

The increased snaps were the result of injuries, to be sure, but good things happen when Rollins takes the field. He should earn some of Casey Hayward's snaps in the remaining weeks, so the Packers can see what he's really capable of.

Falling: WR James Jones

3 of 5

In Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings, we declared that James Jones was back. He had 100-plus receiving yards and a touchdown for the first time since Week 6, re-emerging at a crucial juncture for the Packers.

However, we spoke too soon.

Aaron Rodgers targeted Jones six times against the Bears, but the veteran failed to bring in a single reception. Moreover, he dropped what would have been a game-winning touchdown catch in the end zone on the Packers' final drive of the game.

"I dropped it. I dropped it, period," Jones said after the game, per Mike Spofford of Packers.com. "It (stinks), man. You let your team down. We had an opportunity to win the game. I dropped the ball."

As a result of his dropped passes, Jones' stock is also dropping heading into Week 13. Can he turn it on like he did against the Vikings when Green Bay takes on the Lions? It's one of the sparks this offense needs to leave Detroit with a win.

Rising: WR/KR Jeff Janis

4 of 5

The hype has reached a fever pitch...but it's time to step back and think that perhaps, at this point, it's deserved.

In some fans' minds, second-year receiver Jeff Janis' stock has been skyrocketing since he arrived in Green Bay, but he hadn't done much to back that up. Until recently.

In Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings, Janis had a punt return of 70 yards, which he followed up with a 64-yard return against the Bears on Thanksgiving.

Still, despite his special teams successes, Janis has been largely left out of the offensive game plan, coming in on a play here and there to block or run a route but infrequently getting targets.

The coaching staff seems to be concerned that Janis is still too green, but with Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and James Jones all struggling with drops and gaining separation, something has to change.

Could Janis be part of the solution?

"Jeff Janis is coming on, no doubt about it," head coach Mike McCarthy said in his press conference Friday, per the Packers' Twitter account. "Jeff is getting more opportunities. He's earned that."

McCarthy should back up his words by giving Janis a larger role in the offense in Week 13. What's the worst that could happen, given the current state of this offense?

Falling: LB Nate Palmer

5 of 5

The Packers defense has been performing remarkably well despite having to compensate for the offense most of the time, but it's not without its own weak links.

Unfortunately, linebacker Nate Palmer appears to be one of those.

At this point in the season, it's unclear why Palmer has 544 snaps to rookie Jake Ryan's 46, per Pro Football Focus. Sure, being a starter means that it's harder to play consistently well, but Palmer has been a liability on the field at times this season.

For instance, against the Bears, tight end Zach Miller caught a touchdown pass when it was unclear whether Palmer or safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was supposed to cover him. Clay Matthews signaled to Palmer before the play, but for whatever reason Miller went uncovered.

Palmer grades out as the No. 50 out of 57 qualifying inside linebackers against the run this season by Pro Football Focus. He has nine missed tackles and is allowing a catch rate of 72.7 percent.

As Palmer's stock falls, it would be nice to see more of Ryan in the middle through the final quarter of the season.
