New York Jets vs. New York Giants Betting Odds, Analysis, NFL Pick

OddsShark.comDec 1, 2015

The New York Jets (6-5) will attempt to break a five-game series losing streak against the New York Giants (5-6) when they square off at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The Jets have gone 0-4-1 against the spread in dropping the past five meetings with the Giants, who are still tied atop the NFC East with the Washington Redskins despite falling to them 20-14 last week as one-point road favorites.

Point spread: This game opened as a pick 'em; the total was 45 early in the week, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark (line updates and matchup report).

Why the Jets can cover the spread

The Jets probably wish they were playing in the NFC East this season since they would be in first place ahead of the Giants. But they are not and need to fight for one of the AFC wild-card spots if they are going to make the playoffs because the New England Patriots need only one victory to clinch the AFC East for the seventh straight year.

This is obviously not the typical road game for them either because they share the same facility with the Giants. It is worth noting that the five consecutive wins for the Giants have been spread out over the previous 16 years, with the last meeting taking place in 2011.

The Jets will also get a fresh perspective on the rivalry from first-year head coach Todd Bowles, who brings a different energy with him than his predecessor, Rex Ryan.

Why the Giants can cover the spread

The Giants cannot afford to extend their losing streak to three in what is the most critical time of the season. If they want to win their division, they need to beat teams like the Jets, especially since they play only one NFC East foe the rest of the way. Their last three losses have been all been decided by six points or less, too, proving they have remained competitive and could have won any of them by scoring another touchdown.

To beat the Jets, the Giants need to get off to a better start, unlike last week’s 20-14 road loss to the Washington Redskins, which they trailed 17-0 at halftime and 20-0 early in the fourth quarter.

When the Jets lost two weeks ago on the road to the Houston Texans, they had the same problem, falling behind 24-10 heading into the fourth. In their last two losses, the Giants have given up the first touchdown, and reversing that trend here would definitely help their chances of earning a victory.

Smart pick

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin knows New York better than Bowles and has a lot more experience in situations like this. As a home dog and with a two-time Super Bowl champion at quarterback in Eli Manning, the Giants are simply the more attractive side.

Series trends aside, the Giants are 4-0 straight up and ATS in their last four games after losing as favorites, and they will make it 5-0 with a win and cover here versus the Jets.

Betting trends

The Jets are 0-5 SU and 0-4-1 ATS in their last five games against the Giants.

The Giants are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games in Week 13.

The Jets are 4-17 SU in their last 21 games against the NFC East division.
