Jahlil Okafor Not Facing Police Investigation for Scuffle with Fan Outside Bar
Despite allegedly getting involved in a fight outside a Boston bar Wednesday night, Philadelphia 76ers center Jahlil Okafor is not currently facing a police investigation.
According to ESPN's Jeff Goodman, Okafor scuffled with a heckler following the winless Sixers' loss to the Celtics.
TMZ released a video of the incident, and it appears to show the former Duke standout getting physical:
Despite the video evidence, Boston police revealed Friday that there will be no investigation or charges unless a victim steps forward, per ESPN.com.
According to Goodman, a source close to Okafor said someone taunted the 2015 No. 3 overall pick, which caused the situation to escalate: "Apparently, they said: 'The 76ers suck and you guys are all losers. You'll never win a game,'" the source said. "I was around the corner when it happened. I saw him a minute after he knocked the dude out. I think the guy was just talking (expletive). Saying the Sixers suck."
Per Goodman, the 76ers later released a statement describing their knowledge of the incident: "We are aware of the report and we are currently working to gather additional information. Until that time, we will have no further comment," the team said.
While the Sixers are struggling mightily this season with a record of 0-16, Okafor has been excellent, averaging 18.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
Okafor may very well be the leading candidate for the NBA's Rookie of the Year Award, and he is the one player capable of holding the interest of weary 76ers fans.
It is unclear if the NBA or the Sixers will take any action against Okafor despite the lack of a police investigation, but the fact that he has avoided legal issues for the time being is a major coup for a 76ers franchise that has had very little to celebrate this season.
