Before kick-off, the visitors unveiled a banner in thanks of the support of the British footballing community over the past fortnight:

After a fairly uninspiring performance by Tottenham earlier in the day, fans were hoping Jurgen Klopp's side would offer a little more by way of entertainment:

An eerily quiet Anfield witnessed a forgettable opening:

And the loudest cheer came when Kolo Toure tried his luck with a volley from outside the area:

Christian Benteke had the ball in the net but was called back for offside, before Simon Mignolet was penalised for holding on to the ball for more than 20 seconds:

Henri Saivet made the Belgian 'keeper pay, smashing home from the resultant free-kick to give the visitors the lead:

It was a lead that didn't last long, though, with James Milner converting from the spot and Benteke lashing home on the stroke of half-time to put the Reds in front:

Liverpool fans had every right to be pleased with the way their side responded to the concession of the opening goal:

The Belgian striker was back in the thick of it minutes after the re-start, stroking home before being curiously called back for a foul:

Fans were torn over whether Benteke's new LeBron James-style celebration was cheeky, impressive or embarrassing:

While Benteke nor Liverpool couldn't trouble the score in the second half, Jurgen Klopp's side held on to record a 2-1 win that puts them into the Europa League knockout stages:

Whether Tottenham Hotspur, the only other English team in the Europa League, join them there, though, remains to be seen.
