Ray-Ray Armstrong to 49ers: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldNov 25, 2015

One day after being waived by the Oakland Raiders, linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong didn't have to travel far to find a new NFL home.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday the San Francisco 49ers claimed Armstrong off waivers, filling a roster spot created by placing defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey on injured reserve.

Armstrong has been under investigation for allegedly taunting a police dog, but Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio had dismissed the incident earlier this month.

"I've caught wind of this story. I'm going to put it in the 'silly' category," said Del Rio, per Fox Sports.com's Alex Marvez. "I think once the facts come to light I don't think there's going to be much of an issue. I wouldn't make too much of it."

Authorities determined Armstrong's actions toward the dog weren't malicious, per the Associated Press, so it doesn't appear San Francisco has much to worry about with regard to Armstrong's legal situation.

In terms of what he brings to the gridiron, the 24-year-old appeared in 10 games with Oakland this year and started two. Armstrong was ultimately supplanted by now-suspended star Aldon Smith. The fact the Raiders still cut him in the aftermath of Smith's ban is telling of his lackluster performance.

CSNCalifornia.com's Scott Bair highlighted some of the issues Armstrong had this year after showing promise through training camp:

Niners general manager Trent Baalke has invested in a talented player who may simply need a change of scenery to thrive. Transitioning from the Raiders' 4-3 defense to San Francisco's 4-3 alignment may limit Armstrong's impact to special teams in the beginning, though.

The outside linebacker position is rather crowded in San Francisco, limiting Armstrong's ability to contribute therein. Veteran Ahmad Brooks and emerging young pass-rusher Aaron Lynch, 22, serve as starters backed up by past third-round picks in Corey Lemonier and rookie Eli Harold.

This is a lost year for the Niners under first-year head coach Jim Tomsula. Presumptive franchise quarterback Colin Kaepernick has collapsed, while the reputable defense hasn't picked up the slack, ranking 28th in yards allowed per contest through Week 11.

Any roster additions at this juncture will do little but to develop players with an eye toward marked improvement in 2016 and beyond.
