Jack Swagger Is Perfect Fit to Create Riveting Rivalry with Alberto Del Rio

Aaron BowerNov 25, 2015

After being thrown into the WWE World Heavyweight Championship tournament not long after coming back to WWE, it's no surprise it's taken Alberto Del Rio a while to find a foe with which to fight.

But after the dust quickly settled on Survivor Series, Del Rio looked set to go at it with somewhat of a forgotten face from WWE television in recent times: Jack Swagger.

Some would argue that Swagger is not a good fit for someone of Del Rio's stature, but when you weigh up the circumstances and the potential for some good storyline depth, this could actually be a really good move for both men.

Take Swagger, for example. According to ProFightDB.com, Swagger hasn't wrestled on either Raw or SmackDown since July, when he lost to Rusev. That's an extraordinary amount of time for someone who's clearly in good condition to be away from WWE TV, but it could be something that works in his favor moving forward.

Sometimes when wrestlers are stuck in a bit of a dead end with their booking, it's easy to just keep sending them out week after week, racking up loss after loss. But instead of doing that with Swagger, he's taken a bit of time off TV. Sure, he's continued to wrestle at live events, but television is a completely different animal to live shows.

Whether that was because there were no serious storylines for him to get involved will probably never be known, but Swagger has been able to come back refreshed as a babyface and start again, so to speak. The reaction he got from the crowd on Monday night showed the beauty of being absent for a while, as his "We the people!" chant was certainly loud enough to be noticed at the end of his segment with Del Rio.

Let's not forget that Swagger is an impressive technician inside the ring, too. His matches may never be Match of the Year contenders, but they are often solid and enjoyable to watch. Throw him in with someone like Del Rio, who is clearly in great condition and looks sharp more often than not, and this will be a watchable rivalry inside the squared circle.

But thankfully, there's even more to this feud than just Swagger's return momentum and their ability in the ring.

There's genuine depth in the storyline, which can now develop to be one of WWE's more intriguing. At a time when many have felt let down by the events from Survivor Series and a disappointing finish to the show, feuds like Swagger vs. Del Rio could be vital for WWE and its ratings in the weeks to come.

You've got Zeb Colter by Del Rio's side, Swagger's former ally who has effectively "defected" to MexAmerica. That gives Swagger a legitimate reason to go after Del Rio and Colter, rather than just a random feud thrown together for no reason.

Have Swagger come out and say he's fighting for America, which will clearly give him some good momentum as a babyface. The "USA" chants didn't take long to get going when Swagger emerged on the ramp on Monday night, so with some proper storyline development, Swagger could get major momentum here.

And Del Rio will benefit, too. So often WWE's midcard champions have been exposed to a lack of depth to their feuds and just left to shuffle along and slot into plans without any real expectation.

This rivalry should be very different, however. Whether it was done deliberately or by accident, WWE created a perfect opportunity for Jack Swagger to fit back into its storylines. He'll be a perfect fit for Del Rio as the weeks and months go on.
