Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Arjen Robben, Cristiano Ronaldo Rumours

Rory MarsdenNov 25, 2015

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has refused to rule out the idea of signing Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben while also attempting to clarify previous comments made about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Robben has been linked with a move away from the Allianz Arena, and United reportedly "wouldn't hesitate" to offer £50 million for the winger, per Spanish outlet Don Balon (via Jamie Anderson in the Daily Star).

Van Gaal recently sparked speculation over Real Madrid's Ronaldo when saying he was hopeful of signing the Portuguese star, per Sky Sports.

However, the Dutch manager felt his words were misrepresented, so he steered clear of confirming or denying a pursuit of Robben, per ESPN FC's Richard Jolly:

"

If I answer that question, then you are writing [United are trying to sign] Robben, what you have written about Ronaldo and that I didn't say.

Still I need more balance in my selection. I want that we have also fast wingers and that is a better balance in the team.

"

Robben, 31, looks to be the ideal target for Van Gaal as he remains a high-quality player. The pair have a good relationship after working together at Bayern and with the Dutch national team, per Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe and Dean Jones:

The January arrival of the vastly experienced Robben at Old Trafford would give them a huge boost in their pursuit of the Premier League title, not least because he has played in the English top flight with Chelsea.

Recent injuries to Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial have exposed a lack of depth in the United front line, with young duo Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard left to shoulder the attacking responsibilities against Watford last weekend.

They performed admirably, but Robben is unquestionably a higher calibre of player and his addition to the United squad would give Van Gaal the added pace he desires.

The same would be true of Ronaldo's addition, but the Real superstar may now be out of reach for United.

According to John Cross in the Mirror, Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to offer Ronaldo a contract worth £250,000 a week after tax, which "almost certainly blows Manchester United out of the water."

Indeed, while the Red Devils would undoubtedly be open to shelling out plenty of money to re-sign their former star, matching PSG's reported offer—which would cost United £500,000 a week given UK tax laws—may just be a step too far.
