Wojciech Szczesny Reacts to Barcelona vs. Roma Defeat in Surprising Manner

Matt JonesNov 25, 2015

Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny had to pick the ball out of his net six times on Tuesday night as Barcelona ran riot against the Giallorossi, but the Polish international confessed he enjoyed the standard of football exhibited by the European champions at the Camp Nou.

“It was beautiful to watch because we played against a team from another planet,” said Szczesny to BT Sport (Sacha Pisani of Goal.com), who had the best view in the house as the Blaugrana romped to a 6-1 win. “I was in goal playing for AS Roma, but I appreciated what I saw from Barcelona. They were ridiculously good. As hard as it is to lose a game 6-1, it was beautiful to watch.”

Here’s what the on-loan Arsenal man had to say in full:

While it’s never usually acceptable to pour praise on the opposition in the wake of such a humbling defeat, there’s no denying Barcelona were magnificent on the night.

Lionel Messi, starting his first game since September, bagged a brace, as did Luis Suarez, while Neymar ran riot from his berth from the left-hand side. It was an ominous sign for the rest of Europe that this is a team keen on clinging onto their Champions League crown.

Messi’s first and Barcelona’s second on the night was particularly special, as we can see here, courtesy of BT Sport Football:

For Szczesny and his team, it was a very difficult evening. Roma have been struggling defensively for the majority of the campaign, and without their two key counter-attacking players in Gervinho and Mohamed Salah, they found it tough to surge up the field. Subsequently, they were subject to wave after wave of Barcelona pressure.

Still, it takes something a little special to score six goals against a team of Roma’s class. Messi looked invigorated in his return, Neymar dazzled, and Suarez was a bundle of energy up top. “We were lucky to lose only 6-1 actually,” said Roma defender Maicon, per BBC Sport.

As we can see here, courtesy of TheSPORTBible, the goalscoring feats achieved by the Barcelona attacking threesome are rather remarkable:

The game is analysed in detail these days, and there will be some pundits that castigate the performance turned in by Roma on the night. Szczesny’s standpoint is refreshing, though, as sometimes, especially against players of Barcelona’s calibre, there is very little you can do when they are at full tilt.

There’s an aura about this Blaugrana team at the moment, and with Messi back in the starting XI once again, they’re only going to improve. If they can continue to preserve the levels that were on show at the Camp Nou on Tuesday and in the 4-0 demolition of bitter rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu at the weekend, another history-making season surely beckons.
