Chelsea Transfer News: Latest on Saido Berahino, Robin van Persie Rumours

Tom SunderlandNov 24, 2015

Chelsea are confident of cutting a deal to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino this winter if the Englishman ends up leaving the Hawthorns, but the Blues won't be landing Robin van Persie in January.

According to ESPN FC's Peter O'Rourke, Jose Mourinho's side are seeking striker reinforcements, and Berahino is viewed as a realistic target following his falling out with the west Midlands outfit over the summer.

Contract negotiations between the two parties are understood to have reached an impasse, and the Baggies might consider selling their star given they'll soon enter the last 18 months of his current deal.

This won't be the first transfer window in which Berahino's attention is grabbed by apparent interest in his services, but West Brom boss Tony Pulis stated his forward is better-equipped this time around, per Goal's Sacha Pisani:

"

He's had two or three windows now - that he's experienced this situation and he'll be a lot stronger and a lot more understanding of what goes on in terms of what's spoken about. I pulled him to one side and he made me a cup of green tea. He had 20 minutes in my office, he understands, he knows the score. But it's taken a while to get him back to thinking straight.

He's still not near what he was at the back end of last season. His form has dropped and dipped but the penny's dropped and he has to be switched on. The kid realises and understands that - irrespective of what we do as a club - he's got to be right in himself. He's definitely got his head down but it did affect Saido.

"

Pulis went on to profess that it "really shook" Berahino to fall under the belief he was moving to a bigger club only for it to not materialise, but he'll face similar challenges coming up to the new year.

Especially if Chelsea can have their way, with the reigning Premier League champions hoping to change their fortunes following a nightmarish start to the campaign.

Diego Costa is the club's top scorer with four in 16 games so far this term, but his record has hardly stood up to last season, where he bagged 21 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions.

Berahino is currently fighting to regain his form of last season, and WhoScored.com recently summarised just how quiet the 2015-16 campaign has been already:

But after ESPN FC reported earlier in November that Radamel Falcao's loan deal at Stamford Bridge could be ended early, Chelsea might be able to offer the disgruntled Berahino the promise of a fresh start in England's capital.

One striker who won't be boosting their ranks, however, is former Manchester United and Arsenal frontman Van Persie, who stated his commitment to Fenerbahce in a recent interview with Turkish Football (h/t Daily Star's Alex Harris): "There is a lot of talk about Chelsea and Barcelona but I have received no offers and I am dedicated to Fenerbahce."

The 32-year-old has scored five goals since moving to the Super Lig, and despite speculation growing around a Premier League return, it appears Van Persie will persevere in Istanbul past this winter.

Harris' report also quoted a statement from Fenerbahce, claiming there is "no idea for selling" the forward, who has a little more than two-and-a-half years to run on his deal with Fener.
