Shelby Miller Reportedly Traded to Arizona Diamondbacks

Tim DanielsNov 19, 2015

Starting pitcher Shelby Miller is the latest member of the Atlanta Braves to be traded as the organization's rebuilding process rolls on. Atlanta dealt Miller to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports confirmed the report.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com first reported on Dec. 5 that the Diamondbacks "have pushed on [Miller]" in trade talks with the Braves, noting Atlanta was interested in obtaining an outfielder, especially A.J. Pollock, as part of the deal. However, on Tuesday, Olney reported the outfielder was not part of the trade.

On Nov. 30, Heyman reported Miller "is creating quite a feeding frenzy on the trade market, and it's to the point it's got to be record interest for a pitcher who went 6-17."

Heyman added the Braves have "put a very high price tag on Miller" and outlined some of the packages discussed:

"

The Braves, according to sources, asked the Yankees for top young right-hander Luis Severino in their talks. Severino was merely a request and there is no evidence the Yanks are considering that.

The Braves are also said to have asked for a big package from the Dodgers, believed to include young outfielder Joc Pederson, and they are said to expect young outfielder Marcell Ozuna, who's available, plus more from the Marlins.

"

Atlanta has done a terrific job of accumulating young pitching as it retooled its farm system over the past couple of years. Eight of the team's top 10 prospects are currently pitchers, according to MLB.com's Prospect Watch.

The Braves finished last in the league in runs scored and lack hitting depth in the minor leagues, however. Eventually, the front office will need to move some of its pitching to bolster the lineup in a significant way.

The 25-year-old Miller, who joined Atlanta from the St. Louis Cardinals prior to last season, posted a 3.02 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 205.1 innings in 2015.
