Sami Zayn, Billy Gunn and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertNov 18, 2015

The Performance Center is at the heart of WWE NXT news this week, as the place that Sami Zayn has finally returned to, where Billy Gunn is reportedly no longer welcome and where fans can soon live out their dreams of being a Superstar.

After losing much of 2015 to injury, Zayn is getting back into his training routine.

Gunn is reportedly out as a trainer in the developmental system. It's a surprising situation as it was a powerlifting competition that eventually led to his dismissal.

In other NXT news, WWE is having another fantasy camp at the Performance Center soon, an injured talent is rehabbing at the facility and Cameron is working on her game there, as well.

Sami Zayn Reportedly Resumes Training

1 of 5

A shoulder injury has kept Sami Zayn from being around during Finn Balor's rise and Apollo Crews' arrival. It's not yet clear how long before he hops into that mix, but at least he's taking steps in that direction.

PWInsider reported (h/t Wrestle Zone) that Zayn has begun to do some light training at the Performance Center. The report noted that the training didn't include any ring work.

It has to be frustrating for Zayn to have his time on the sidelines stretch on like this. There was talk earlier that he would be back by October, per Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Wrestling Inc). There's no new timeline for his return.

Another All-Access Event on Its Way

2 of 5

WWE fans will again get a taste of the NXT life. The company is set to host a second all-access experience at the Performance Center.

WWE announced on its official website that next January, it will open the developmental system's doors to paying fans. The package includes a Q&A with NXT coaching staff, a promo class, tour and photo opportunities.

Clearly, the first edition was successful. The safe bet is that this becomes a regular thing.

It's an easy way for WWE to take in a few dollars while giving passionate fans a fantasy experience they will long treasure.

Lana Training at NXT Facility

3 of 5

A wrist injury took Lana off TV. It derailed what looked to be a sure collision with Summer Rae. Should that matchup happen later, Lana will be more prepared.

During her time away from WWE programming, she is apparently working on her game. Lana tweeted that she would be training at the WWE Performance Center.

The more she can develop her in-ring skills, the more valuable she becomes. WWE can plug her into more stories, and there will more options during those narratives. With Rusev injured and Lana having no current storyline, putting her to work with the NXT coaching staff is smart business.

NXT Trainer Reportedly Fired for Failed Drug Test

4 of 5

Billy Gunn looks to be done as an NXT coach.

F4WOnline (h/t Wrestle Zone) reported that WWE fired Gunn after he tested positive for elevated testosterone levels. WWE reportedly only recently learned of the failed test as it was not something the company issued, but part of Gunn's participation in a powerlifting contest.

WWE had to make this move. It can't have a guy who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in a leadership role while it tells its talents to lay off that stuff.

One would imagine, though, that this may end up being more of a lengthy suspension. After a separation of several months, WWE can reach out to him again.

Other News, Notes

Bayley traveled with the main roster during the last leg of the European tour. Bayley wrestled a series of tag matches with either Becky Lynch or Bayley in her corner.

This was a good chance for WWE to see how more casual fans reacted to the NXT women's champ. All signs point to her getting promoted before long. WWE asking her to work these shows is just further evidence of that.

Per ProFightDB.com, indy wrestler Jaxson James worked against Fandango in a dark match during the main event taping on Tuesday.

James is well traveled, working in several promotions in the South as well as in Europe. The former college football player is built a lot like Gunner from TNA.

On Twitter, Cameron posted a photo of a cut above her eye she said she suffered while training at the Performance Center.

NXT will hold a taping during Royal Rumble weekend at the CFE Arena in Orlando, Florida. Triple H tweeted the news, calling it the "biggest Orlando taping ever."
