Arsenal Transfer News: Daniele Rugani, Jackson Martinez, Joel Campbell Rumours

Matt JonesNov 18, 2015

Juventus will reportedly consider loaning out rumoured Arsenal target Daniele Rugani in the January transfer window, but they will not entertain the prospect of a permanent sale.

That’s according to Tuttosport (h/t football-italia.net), which noted that Napoli are one team interested in the highly rated young defender, as well as the Gunners and Manchester United. It’s stated in the piece the Bianconeri will not cash in “for any sum” in January, preferring instead to hold off a few seasons “when his value is expected to increase very substantially.”

Rugani is a young player who many expect to be the future of the Italian national team, but as of yet, he hasn’t made an appearance for Juventus in Serie A this season despite shining on loan with Empoli in 2014-15. Here’s a look at what he can offer:

The 21-year-old has all the qualities you would expect from a prodigious Italian defender. Rugani is brilliant in the air and reads the game superbly. He is also a composed and elegant distributor of the ball.

As beIN Sports’ Matteo Bonetti noted at the end of the youngster’s loan spell with Empoli, he is an extremely mature player, ending the campaign with an impeccable disciplinary record:

Arsenal could definitely do with some additional options at centre-back, especially younger players who could be in the squad for years to come. A loan deal would make little sense for them at this point, though, given Rugani would not become an automatic first choice, nor would the Gunners wish to assist in the development of a player for potential Champions League rivals.

Jackson Martinez Discusses Poor Form

Reported Arsenal target Jackson Martinez has spoken openly about his struggles since signing for Atletico Madrid in the summer, despite apparent interest from Arsenal, but he will not seek a move.

As noted by David Wright of the Daily Express, the Gunners were interested in a deal for the Colombian powerhouse in the summer before he opted to move to the Vicente Calderon. Since making the switch, Martinez has struggled to find his feet in La Liga, notching a meagre two goals in the division.

“I try to adapt gradually, although I haven't produced as expected,” admitted Martinez, per Wright. “The team has had good results. Personally I have to keep working. The support at Vicente Calderon is a positive for me. I'll fight until the end and it's not in my head, as has been said, to leave next season.”

ArsenalFanTV isn’t completely convinced that Martinez would have been the answer for the Gunners anyway:

The former Porto man is a brilliant forward and has proven he has what it takes to thrive at the highest level. Making such a big move can occasionally see players take time to adjust and as he gets better acquainted with his team-mates, the style of play and the Spanish culture. Expect the 29-year-old to have a much more prosperous end to the campaign.

Arsenal could definitely do with another quality player to use up front. Martinez is a little too similar in style to Olivier Giroud, though, meaning the Gunners should probably seek a striker who can bring something refreshing to their attack.

Turkish Giants Battle for Joel Campbell

Fenerbahce and Galatasary are set to go head-to-head in a race to land Arsenal forward Joel Campbell, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

That’s according to talkSPORT (h/t Luke Gardener of the Daily Star), which claimed despite a recent run in the Arsenal first team, the Costa Rica international is likely to depart. Since joining the Gunners in 2011, Campbell has never been able to have a prolonged impact at the Emirates Stadium, being shipped out on loan to the likes of Olympiacos and Villarreal.

While the last few games, which included a goal away at Swansea City and a start in the derby match against Tottenham Hotspur, would have delighted the forward, it’s clear he needs to make a move for the sake of his own career.

With players like Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Theo Walcott all battling for similar spots in the side, barring an injury crisis like the one Arsenal are currently enduring, Campbell will be limited to a bit part role. There’s definitely potential to unlock within the Costa Rica man, but he needs a transfer elsewhere in order to do so.
