McCoy Out vs. Jets

Ryan Comments on McCoy's Playing Status

Wednesday, Dec. 30

"We all know how it looks right now," head coach Rex Ryan said, per Mike Rodak of ESPN. "So it probably doesn’t look real good but we’ll see, you know? I’ll say this; I'm never gonna put a player out there that I think’s at more of an injury risk or can’t defend themselves. Regardless of how competitive they are."

Injuries Have Hampered McCoy's First Season in Buffalo

McCoy missed the Bills' early-season showdowns against the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans with a Grade 2 hamstring pull, but he's operated as the fulcrum of Buffalo's offense when healthy.

While piles of touchdowns have been elusive, McCoy has resembled the shifty and dynamic open-field presence Buffalo craved when it parted with linebacker Kiko Alonso to snag one of the game's most polished rushers.

And since the Bills have leaned on the run all year long to help ease the pressure on a passing game that isn't replete with weapons, McCoy's ability to pace the offense and keep the chains moving has become invaluable.

If Shady out, rookie Karlos Williams—who has been a touchdown machine—will take over as Buffalo's lead back.

"No. 1 he’s an explosive athlete who has size, speed, vision, burst," Ryan said about Williams, per Kyle Ferrara of the team's official website. "He’s got all of that. You don’t luck into six straight games with a touchdown. You don’t luck into that."

The Bills don't want to see McCoy sidelined, but Williams clearly has the tools necessary to carry the load in the veteran's absence.
