ESPN's Adam Caplan reported that Mathews, Philadelphia's second-leading rusher this year, had surgery on his groin recently and had been dealing with the injury since Week 6.
Mathews Emerged As Valuable Back After Murray's Struggles
Mathews arrived in Philadelphia this offseason and has thrived as the primary backup to reigning NFL rushing champion DeMarco Murray. Unfortunately, as has been commonplace in his career, health issues have hindered Mathews to a degree in 2015.
In addition to dealing with the groin injury, Mathews suffered a concussion in Week 10's loss to Miami, after which he missed three games.
Mathews was a welcome addition to the Philadelphia offense when Murray was not getting enough touches in the backfield. He became Chip Kelly's primary running back before going down with that concussion, rushing for 539 yards on just over five yards per carry.
Fortunately, the surgery happened now and not during training camp or OTAs. Mathews should be ready to go when offseason workouts begin.
