Junior Galette Suspended: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Joseph ZuckerNov 16, 2015

The NFL suspended Washington Redskins linebacker Junior Galette two games after authorities charged the 27-year-old in a domestic violence incident in January. ESPN.com's Adam Schefter first reported the news Monday.

According to Mike Jones of the Washington Post, the suspension amounts to a fine of two game checks for Galette since he'll already miss the entire year after tearing his Achilles in August. Head coach Jay Gruden confirmed to reporters Galette's suspension begins immediately.

Police in Kenner, Louisiana, arrested Galette for domestic violence/simple battery on Jan. 5, and Galette's cousin, Terrance Banks, was also arrested on a simple battery charge. Galette was alleged to have choked and pushed a female victim who was found at his home.

In February, Kenner city attorney Mike Power dismissed the charges against both Galette and Banks.

"Power said interviews with witnesses cast doubt on whether the alleged victim was a member of the household," reported Evan Woodbery of the Times-Picayune. "Domestic violence charges can only involve persons in the same household, he said."

In addition to the domestic violence charge, a 2013 video emerged purportedly showing Galette hitting a woman twice with a belt during a fight on a beach in Miami. Although Galette's lawyer denied Galette's alleged involvement, the Times-Picayune's Larry Holder spoke to league sources who confirmed the man in question was Galette.

Less than a year after signing him to a four-year, $41.5 million extension, the New Orleans Saints cut Galette in July.

He eventually signed a one-year deal with the Redskins but shortly thereafter suffered a season-ending injury.

The fact his two-game suspension won't carry over to next season will help Galette's bargaining position should he choose to re-sign with Washington or move to another team.
