United Need Herrera's Creativity
Herrera's loss has been felt in a United midfield long on defensive instincts and steady passing but short on forward-thinking verve. The Spaniard certainly embodies the latter quality.
The former Athletic Bilbao ace offers goals and creativity from the middle of the park. He's struck two goals already this season, along with one assist, according to ESPN FC.
Though he's used all too sparingly—the same site reveals the 26-year-old has started just nine games this season—Herrera is a prolific threat in attacking areas. He also offers Van Gaal's team useful versatility.
With his Basque schemer on the treatment table, Van Gaal has had to get creative replacing him. The Dutchman has towering Belgian powerhouse Marouane Fellaini, who can be a goal threat as an aerial menace.
Herrera has been a key player for United when he's had chances to impress, and will now be hoping to put a solid run of games together.
