Tragedy struck Elon University on Wednesday afternoon when junior wide receiver Demitri Allison died after falling from a 10-story residence hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the school announced, citing law enforcement officers.

According to Elon's statement from Smith Jackson, the school's dean of students, Allison "had left the Elon campus yesterday and his teammates, friends and family asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state."

"Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated," athletics director Dave Blank said, per the school's statement. "Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones."

A native of Cornelius, North Carolina, Allison emerged as a core member of the Phoenix receiving corps last season. As a sophomore, Allison finished second on the team with 55 catches for 525 yards and two touchdowns after totaling six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown as a true freshman.
