Recap

Chisnall had already booked his spot in the next round, but it was still shocking to see him lose 5-1 to Mitchell, the BDO World Champion who entered Tuesday's fixtures in last place in Group D.

Mitchell took full advantage of a number of key misses on the doubles from Chizzy, building a quick three-leg lead and closing out the match by finishing double 18.

As shared by PDC Darts, Chizzy's checkout percentage was appalling:

Chisnall didn't seem too bothered with the loss, and he remains one of the favourites to win this year's Grand Slam given his superb form evidenced by his nine-darter against Peter Wright on Monday.

Ian White also got his first win of the competition, beating Jelle Klaasen 5-1 after dropping the opening leg. Finishes of 121 and 103 saw Klaasen's spirits sink in a hurry, and when White added a 14-darter to his resume, it was clear he simply couldn't be stopped.

Huybrechts needed to beat Oosterhuis to keep his chances of qualifying for the next round alive, knowing that even if he got past his opponent, his fate would rest on the shoulders of Van Gerwen.

The Belgian opened with a superb 160 checkout to take a lead he would never relinquish, winning 5-2 to set up Van Gerwen. ByTheMin Darts noted there was little to worry about for Huybrechts:

But things weren't as easy for Mighty Mike as some may have expected. West took out 116 to win the first leg, looking sharp and primed for an upset.

In the very next leg, Van Gerwen came agonisingly close to his second nine-darter this week, missing double 12. He did win the leg and took a quick 3-1 lead, but West closed the gap to set up a tense finish.

Luckily for Huybrechts, Van Gerwen took out the final two legs, ending his night with six 180s and an average of 105. Per Live Darts Volgen, his checkout percentage needs some work heading into the knockout stages:

Peter Wright stole the top spot in Group D from Chisnall with a 5-3 win over Mervyn King, breaking throw just once in the win. The two kept things close for the first six legs, but Wright managed to speed up just in time to send the King home.

As shared by the PDC's official Twitter account, Snakebite isn't the least bit worried heading into the next round:

Lewis booked his ticket to the next round by beating Jones 5-3, while Steve Beaton nearly completed a stunning comeback against Martin Adams. Down 4-1, Beaton forced a decider, only to see his opponent take out double tops to win the match.

In the last match of the night, Michael Smith made quick work of Andy Fordham, winning 5-2

The second round of this year's Grand Slam will start on Wednesday, when the format changes to a standard knockout tournament. All matches will be best-of-19 legs.
