Roger Staubach Says He Cheers for Cowboys, Doesn't Root for Greg Hardy

Hall of Fame quarterback and Dallas Cowboys legend Roger Staubach has become the latest member of the NFL community to speak out against Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy.

"I'm rooting for the Cowboys, I don't root for him," Staubach told Eric Prisbell of USA Today on Tuesday. "I'm still rooting for the Cowboys. I'm not a Hardy fan."

He continued:

People, when they see something they react differently, the same with the (Ray) Rice thing. We know what he did. I've got a wife and four daughters and I've got 12 granddaughters. I would go ballistic if anybody touched any of our daughters or granddaughters in a harmful way. I'm not that forgiving for anybody that commits domestic violence.

"

Staubach added that, in cases of domestic violence, the perpetrators are unlikely to change unless they get help. He noted Hardy's behavior since joining the Cowboys—namely knocking a clipboard out of a special teams coach's hand—suggested that "his temper is not under control yet."

"As I far as how I feel about it, I wouldn’t particularly want someone on my team that had the issues that he has," Staubach added on Wednesday, per Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News.

Hardy, 27, was convicted on charges of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Holder, in 2014. Charges were dismissed after she didn't cooperate with authorities and didn't appear at an appeal hearing. The Cowboys signed Hardy this offseason, and in April the NFL suspended him for 10 games, though the suspension was later reduced to four games.

He's registered 15 tackles, a forced fumble and four sacks in four games this season.

Last week, Deadspin's Diana Moskovitz wrote an article on the Hardy incident that included graphic photos of the injuries Holder sustained and police transcripts. That reignited outrage around the league regarding Hardy's presence in the NFL, and public discontent continues to mount with Hardy and the Cowboys.

Owner Jerry Jones and the team have continued to support him and promote his rehabilitation.
