Barcelona Transfer News: Latest on Marc-Andre Ter Stegen to Liverpool Rumours

Christopher SimpsonNov 10, 2015

Liverpool are reportedly pursuing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen and plan on landing the German by offering him a more prominent role than he currently enjoys at the Camp Nou.

That's according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Metro's Jamie Sanderson), which noted at Anfield the 23-year-old would be "promised a first-choice role in every competition."

The 'keeper is currently utilised in cup competitions and the Champions League by Barca boss Luis Enrique with Claudio Bravo occupying the position between the sticks in the league.

Liverpool are wisely looking to use the prospect of more regular football as a lure to tempt the German away from the Catalan giants.

Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez believes the goalkeeper was instrumental in Barca's Champions League win last season:

Like compatriot Manuel Neuer, Ter Stegen is particularly known for his technical ability with the ball at his feet, which he demonstrated in Barca's recent win over BATE Borisov, courtesy of BT Sport Football:

Indeed, way back in 2011-12 at former club Borussia Monchengladbach, Ter Stegen was already showing his class with some exceptional distribution despite only turning 20 in April of that campaign, per WhoScored.com:

Prior to moving to the Blaugrana he was already garnering considerable praise, such as from international team-mate and rival Neuer. Per Goal's Brian Oliver, he said: "Ter Stegen is sensational, a great future goalkeeper. He is agile and knows very well how to solve the most complicated situations."

The 23-year-old has a considerable future ahead of him and could well be Neuer's eventual successor for the German national side.

Though Simon Mignolet is currently performing adequately for the Reds, the Belgian has been inconsistent previously so Liverpool would be remiss not to pursue an upgrade on him if one should become available, and Ter Stegen is undoubtedly a better long-term prospect.

However, as Sanderson noted, Ter Stegen's release clause is a princely £56.8 million. Barca aren't likely to allow him to leave for less, particularly as first-choice Bravo is now 32.

It's conceivable the Reds could have more success with a loan deal, but don't expect Ter Stegen to be departing Barcelona permanently in the foreseeable future.
