Ruslan Provodnikov vs. Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez: Winner, Recap and Reaction
If you didn't have access to a computer or don't live in Monaco, you missed Ruslan Provodnikov put Jesus Alvarez Rodriguez away in the fourth round Saturday.
Provodnikov backed Rodriguez against the ropes and unleashed a series of haymakers and body shots that sent Rodriguez to the ground, ending the fight and giving Provodnikov the 25th win of his career in 29 fights.
But the big story was Rodriguez dropping to the canvas for the first loss of his career. The 23-year-old had a height advantage (two centimeters) and a much greater reach advantage (nine centimeters), but the 31-year-old veteran from Russia used his lack of height and reach to his advantage.
The fight wasn't available in the United States, as Provodnikov was unable to secure a TV deal in America and had to take it overseas to the Monte Carlo Hotel in Monaco, per ESPN.com's Dan Rafael.
Provodnikov took the young, albeit talented, Rodriguez and dominated him from the start. By the time he got to the fourth round, Provodnikov started attacking his opponent's body and used his power to baffle Rodriguez before the referee called for the bell.
Provodnikov came into Saturday's bout ranked eighth in the world in the super lightweight division, per BoxRec, and although he picked up an impressive win over a previously undefeated fighter, there may not be any room for him to move up in the rankings, as seven of the fighters above Provodnikov are undefeated.
The win may not move him up, but it will get the division to talk about Provodnikov going forward.
