Beason Put On Injured Reserve
Saturday, Nov. 7
After getting torched for 52 points against the New Orleans Saints during Week 8, the Giants defense received some tough news Saturday, as the team placed Beason on season-ending injured reserve, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
This makes five seasons dominated by injury, as Pro Football Focus' Pete Damilatis pointed out:
It's a tough pill for the Giants to swallow, having signed Beason to a three-year, $17 million deal last season that has become one of the worst signings of general manager Jerry Reese's time with New York.
Damilatis explained:
According to Michael Eisen of the Giants' website, the team put Beason on IR to make room for defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, who could make his 2015 debut Sunday after a July 4 fireworks accident badly injured his hand.
The Giants have the worst defense in the NFL this season, allowing an average of 427 yards per game. Without an effective pass rush and playmakers, the opposition has had all the time in the world to pick apart the Giants. Being without Beason for three games, all of them losses, has hurt.
Now, New York will have to rely on the likes of second-year men Uani Unga and Devon Kennard to keep the linebackers afloat. They have led all players at the position in tackles and have been without Beason at times this season, so this won't be anything new for them. Still, Unga is dealing with a neck issue that has him questionable for Week 9.
The Giants will need Pierre-Paul to bring something to the pass rush and take a little pressure off of the linebackers by making plays in the backfield. If the defense continues to struggle, New York won't make it out of an already weak NFC East.
