Jesse Lingard was a picture of delight after he scored his first senior goal for Manchester United in their 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 22-year-old struck shortly after the restart with a delightful curling effort from outside the area into the bottom corner after calmly controlling a poor headed clearance. United's official Twitter feed captured the moment:

Further, United shared manager Louis van Gaal's praise for the midfielder after the match:

Lingard started for the Red Devils after providing a lovely cushioned volley to assist Wayne Rooney in the win over CSKA Moscow in midweek, and by breaking the deadlock, he made what could have been a much more frustrating afternoon for United a somewhat comfortable win in the end.

Football writer Liam Canning and the Times' James Ducker were among those to praise his fine finish:

According to the Manchester Evening News' Rob Dawson, the youngster had the backing of Van Gaal. Samuel Luckhurst of the same outlet revealed the Dutchman had demonstrated this in the summer:

Dawson also believes he could well have had his goal sooner if not for injury. Nevertheless, Luckhurst feels Lingard has developed well in recent years:

As Squawka revealed, the goal was also significant in the context of United's struggles to convince going forward:

The midfielder has impressed for the club in recent matches and along with Anthony Martial is one of the only players who looks capable of creating something in the final third for United at the moment.

After an assist and a goal in his last two matches, expect him to enjoy a sustained run in United's side after the international break.
