Antoine Douglas vs. Les Sherrington: Winner, Recap and Reaction
For a 23 year old, Antoine Douglas is a smart, patient fighter.
He proved that again on Friday night in Las Vegas.
Douglas improved his record to 19-0-1 after a fourth-round technical knockout of Les Sherrington, capturing both the WBA and WBO International middleweight titles in dominating fashion at The D Hotel.
The Virginia native wasted no time going to work on Sherrington. Using his patience and quick right hand, Douglas knocked down Sherrington with a swift right jab with 1:44 left in the first round. Showtime Sports provided a clip of the knockdown:
Sherrington just wasn't quick enough to counter anything Douglas threw. Douglas' right hand knocked Sherrington down three more times in the next three rounds, including twice in the third round in a one-minute span.
The fight already seemed over after the first knockdown, but the third knockdown proved this fight to be completely one-sided. Actress Rosie Perez even thought so:
Finally, in the fourth round, Douglas knocked Sherrington down for a fifth time thanks to a hook combination to the body before the referee called for the fight. Showtime also provided highlights of the fight, including the knockdown that ended the fight.
It's not often that boxing matches are decided this convincingly. Douglas used his patience and quick jabs to throw the 33-year-old Sherrington off his game. Three years into his professional career, Douglas is slowly establishing himself as one of the fastest up-and-coming stars in boxing, as well as the middleweight division.
Adam Abramowitz from Saturday Nigh believes that Douglas is a star on the rise in the boxing world:
The division is in need of some fresh faces, and Douglas might be one who could make a run for a world title within the next year or two. With fighters like Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin racking up the fight totals, some youth could be added, especially with a guy who has yet to lose in Douglas.
