Serena Williams Asked to File Police Report After Attempted Cellphone Theft

Matt FitzgeraldNov 5, 2015

Women's tennis superstar Serena Williams has been requested to submit a police report by San Francisco authorities after a man allegedly attempted to steal her cellphone Tuesday evening.

The Associated Press (via ESPN.com) reported the news Thursday. According to San Francisco police officer Grace Gatpandan, law enforcement is attempting to gain more information on the suspect and whether he's a continual phone thief.

Williams described the incidentwhich occurred at a Chinese restaurant in San Francisco, Wednesday morning on Facebook. In a rather hilarious and lighthearted account of the events that transpired, Williams called the man a "common petty thief" and explained she had a "superhero sense" suggesting he was a sketchy character:

The 21-time Grand Slam tournament champion proceeded to chase down the man who took her mobile device, which was resting on a chair next to her at the restaurant. When confronted by Williams, the man said he took the wrong phone by mistake and returned it to her.

Being tracked down and caught red-handed in the act by an elite, intimidating and tremendously famous athlete like Williams may be enough to discourage the thief from ever being a repeat offender.

Then again, a police report may indeed be useful if San Francisco police have a case of kleptomania on their hands. Should Williams go forward with a report, perhaps other witnesses could be of some assistance to a potential investigation as well.
