Thirty-one years later, under the same lights, Spurs faced the Belgians once again hoping for a better result than the 2-1 loss suffered in Anderlecht last month. Before the game, all eyes were on Harry Kane, who appears to have rediscovered his confidence with four goals in his previous two outings:
"Harry Kane always gives away his mood in the tunnel pre game, he looks like a caged tiger tonight. Go get 'em Harry! thfc
— Tom Ginn (@TeeGeenothere) November 5, 2015"
Manager Mauricio Pochettino named a strong Spurs side, only resting Mousa Dembele and Heung-Min Son. This decision left many to wonder whether they will still have gas in the tank for Sunday's north London Derby:
"Why are Tottenham playing such a strong team
— Connor Smith (@connorsmith45) November 5, 2015"
"Spurs'll regret picking such a strong team when they're all shattered on Sun. Of that team, I'd say only Trippier & Mason won't play on Sun.
— Josh Keeling (@UnitedJosh) November 5, 2015"
Anderlecht enjoyed the best of the play up until the 29th minute when Harry Kane broke the deadlock with an unstoppable right-footed shot on the edge of the box:
"GOAL KANE! Tottenham 1-0 Anderlecht https://t.co/tZioNV9zNh
— Live Football Goals (@FootyLiveVines) November 5, 2015"
Kane's strike took Spurs into the dressing room at half-time with the lead, but the general perception was that the visitors were putting on a better show:
Anderlecht also started the second half brightly:
"Anderlecht class. Could be a force if allowed stayed together but, sorry, Newcastle + Villa are going to be buying your players in two years
— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) November 5, 2015"
Just past the hour mark, Tottenham might have doubled their lead when Ben Davies hit a superb left-footed shot, only to see it cannon off the bar:
"Ben Davies just ripped the bar
— Trevor DePaul (@swaggyyyTD) November 5, 2015"
"So gutted for Ben Davies, that would have been great for him
— Lewis Gibbons (@LewisGibbons) November 5, 2015"
Sadly, Davies' effort didn't count as a shot on target:
In the 72nd minute, Anderlecht finally found the equaliser, thanks to a fantastic finish from substitute Imoh Ezekiel:
"GOAL EZEKIEL! Tottenham 1-1 Anderlecht pic.twitter.com/EzkrjGsH32
— Live Football Goals (@FootyLiveVines) November 5, 2015"
"Are we really gonna do this every match?
— Angel (@Angel_THFC) November 5, 2015"
The Lilywhites looked to be in danger of throwing the point away until the 87th minute, when substitute Mousa Dembele stepped up to break the hearts of his fellow countrymen with a long-range rocket:
"GOAL DEMBELE! Tottenham 2-1 Anderlecht pic.twitter.com/XPp1Z2ca3H
— Live Football Goals (@FootyLiveVines) November 5, 2015"
"That Dembele Goal had me like... #COYS #THFC pic.twitter.com/E48n5n80SV
— CRXIG (@Craig_CMS) November 5, 2015"
"DEMBÉLÉ, HAVE MY BABIES!
— Lee Charles Hunt. (@iYidKid) November 5, 2015"
The late beauty from Dembele earned Spurs a 2-1 victory to put the north London side at the summit of Europa League Group J.
