$13,000,000 Reasons to Worry After Today's Performance

Paul MongeraSep 20, 2009

Houston We Have a Problem! After today's performance by the Browns, it would be a cliche to say things are looking bleek! Let's look at the facts. Quinn is scheduled to make 2 Million if he does not take 70% of the snaps, 8 Million if he does. Derek Anderson is going to make 5 Million regardless of what he does. Now there is 13 Million against our cap. Man, could have we managed that better.

Quinn left last sesaon many wondering, what could have been, After today's outing it seems to be better left that way. Quinn to put it blatantly was horrid and has been. His accuracy does not match his completion percenatage. Many have been screens or check down completions. Many said he was in command of the huddle, more decisive, more elusive and that's what won him the competition. Today he looked like Penn State playing Akron, and he played for Akron. He looked indecisive, in charge of nothing and if it were not Braylon Edawards would have looked completely ineffective. For all of you Braylon haters, he is the only one on offense, outside of Phil Dawson that actually made the Browns look like they had an offense. Man, I am glad I benched Royal for Edwards on my Fantasy team (6 Receptions for 92 yards). But many think Braylon does not care. I will take that performance every week. Braylon is our best option at offense, and he proved it here today. He had zero drops and played like the Pro Bowler he was in 07, which lead to Quinn's only 20+ yard completion in the air.

Quinn in my opinion only lead the Browns to 3 points! The first 3 were off a turnover where Ken Dorsey could have walked to the sideline with the same score. Now Hall had a bad snap. But what do they teach you in football? They teach you to fall on a fumble, not to try to pick it up and make a play. Now the snap was bad, but not bad enough for Quinn to recover. Quinn although did try, he just needs to realize that he is in the NFL, not Notre Dame playing Army. You must fall on that snap and live to play another play. That play in fact left the Browns down at the half as opposed to a lead at the half.

Lets look at Quinn this year, he is 39 for 66 for 366 with 1 TD  (against the Vikes second string) 2 Fumbles and 2 Interceptions. Now his 59% completion percentagge and 9.2 yards a completion may look decent, but has generated no TD's against a strating defense!  In all fairness as a Browns fan, Derek Anderson would have been burning at the cross if he had similar stats. Oh wait, he did, except he provided more points last year against better teams than Quinn did this year. I mean come on, the Vikes beat the Lions by the same margin as they beat us, except the Vikes did not allow their scrubs to give up a TD in the last seconds against the Lions to make it that close.

Bottom line is this Turnovers lose games. The Browns have not forced enough turnovers, only 1 today and that was due to Special Teams. Again, our defense played well for the 1st half. I also believe the Browns defense is better when the offense establishes drives and scores points in the second half of the game. The Browns have produced only 7 points in the second half of both the games combined, and that was against the Vikings SECOND STRING, or we would have been shut out in two consecutive games in the second half.

Some of you may think Quinn is doing just fine. Which by the numbers I guess is up for debate. He got sacked by the same lineman 4 times today. Now St Clair can take all the blame, but where was his scrambling ability. It was not no where to be found. Brady's check downs and dink and dunk offense were not effective today, last week, and for the sake of an argument will be for the rest of the year. What happens next week when we go to Baltimore? I have a feeling, a bad one, that Quinn will be leaving on a stretcher. I do not want to see that, but his indecisiveness is about to get him hurt. The Ravens will feast off of that and attack. For better or worse, I believe Anderson will see some playing time next week.

In short Browns fans, this is going to be a long year. After last week I thought we could at least beat the Broncos, Bengals, and Raiders? Now I am not so sure. Thank God the NFL has the Lions or this could get ugly... Unless we right the ship.
