McCown Will Avoid Surgery, Go on IR
Wednesday, Dec. 2
Head coach Mike Pettine said on Tuesday that McCown has a non-displaced broken collarbone. He won't need surgery, but his season is over, per Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan.
On Wednesday, the Browns placed McCown on injured reserve.
On who will replace McCown as the team's starting quarterback, Pettine said, "I'm not ready to announce that. Will take everything into consideration and make the decision best for team," per Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland.
Pettine didn't rule out Johnny Manziel for Week 13, per Steve Doerschuk of the Canton Repository.
McCown Hasn't Been the Answer for Woeful Browns
He was 21-of-38 for 212 yards and one touchdown before exiting Monday.
The 36-year-old veteran has played at a high level for much of 2015 while displaying incredible toughness. The latter attribute, however, has been part of his undoing.
McCown suffered a concussion in Week 1 while diving for the goal line and also suffered injuries to his right shoulder and ribs as the year wore on. Although his statistics have been solid, the 2-9 Browns have won just once with McCown under center.
Manziel was supposed to quarterback the team for the remainder of the season, but the team "demoted him to third string" in Week 12 as a result of off-field issues.
Considering how awful Cleveland has been over the past few years, it may be in for another regime change in the offseason.
Manziel will have to show significant signs of improvement on and off the field if he wants a chance to be the Browns' starting QB in 2016 and beyond, while Austin Davis could potentially be the starter for the remainder of another lost season. McCown's career as a starter may very well have come to an end.
