Travis Kelce Underwent Shoulder Surgery, Will Be Ready for Chiefs '17 Season

Scott PolacekMar 1, 2017

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had offseason surgery on his shoulder but is expected to be ready for camp, coach Andy Reid said Wednesday.

"He'll probably miss some time throughout the offseason," Reid said, per Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star, "but he'll be ready, I believe, for camp."

Reid described the surgery as a cleanup procedure. Kelce was listed on the Chiefs' injury report in December, but the extent of his injury is unclear. Reid did not specify if he meant offseason minicamp or training camp.

Kelce has developed into one of the most dangerous tight ends in the league since being selected in the third round of the 2013 draft. He notched 862 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2014 and earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 with 875 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

He followed that up with a career season in 2016 with 85 catches for 1,125 yards, four touchdown catches and another Pro Bowl spot.

Kelce is something of a security blanket for quarterback Alex Smith on underneath routes and often takes advantage of openings when opposing defenses focus on the running game. Smith will have to look elsewhere in the passing attack if Reid's expectation proves incorrect.

With an entire offseason to rehab and get himself back to 100 percent, this shouldn't be much of a concern.
