Manchester United took on CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Tuesday night, looking for three points, which would make their European adventures all the more comfortable.
Louis van Gaal's side had endured three successive 0-0 draws in the Premier League and Capital One Cup.

...but there was some at least some joy in a change of formation.
All eyes were on Rooney, though, as he looked to end his run of bad form.
He didn't get off to the best start:

As United pushed and pushed for the opener, they had David de Gea and Chris Smalling to thank for not falling behind.

Relief for Rooney, who scored his club's first goal in over six hours of football.
It was a historic goal for a number of reasons...
And United did have a few good performances to be pleased with.
