NASCAR at Martinsville 2015: Live Results and Analysis from the Goody's 500
Jeff Gordon will race for the 2015 Sprint Cup in three weeks at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Gordon held off Jamie McMurray in the closing laps of Sunday afternoon's Goody's Headache Relief Shot 500 at Martinsville Speedway for an emotional ninth career checkered flag at the tight and tricky short track. The win is Gordon's first in his final season and automatically advances him to the Championship Round of the Chase.
McMurray finished second.
Denny Hamlin, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five.
The seven remaining Chase drivers who have not secured automatic passage will have some work to do at Texas and Phoenix if they hope to advance.
Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano, who won all three races of the Contender Round, and Kurt Busch will have the most ground to make up after late-race wrecks ruined their day.
Logano led a race-high 207 laps but was spun from the lead and forced into the wall hard by Matt Kenseth on Lap 454 in what appeared to be intentional retaliation for an incident at Kansas three weeks ago that cost the 20 car a chance at a win and advancement.
Kenseth, who was eliminated last week at Talladega, along with his crew chief Jason Ratcliff and team owner Joe Gibbs were to meet with NASCAR officials after the race to discuss the incident and possible discipline.
The Eliminator Round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup continues next Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway with the AAA Texas 500.
