Joe PantornoOct 30, 2015

Nothing says Halloween like horse racing. The 2015 Breeders' Cup, one of the largest events in the sport, kicked off Friday from Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky.

Some of horse racing's biggest names are set to stretch their legs, with some big money to be given out, and Friday saw four races run.

Here is a look at all of the day's action.

Juvenile Turf

A one-mile grass course, the Juvenile Turf gives the horse racing world a chance to view some of the best upcoming two-year-old turf horses that will surely dominate in the future.

The turf circuit is one for European horses to strut their stuff in America, and they did so in the day's first race.

Hit It A Bomb, an Irish horse, used an explosive final few strides in the homestretch to overtake a late surge from the favorite in Airoforce and Birchwood to win by half a head. Here are the prize-money payouts for the $1 million mile:

1Hit It A Bomb$16.40$9.40$6.80
2Airoforce$4.40$3.20
3Birchwood$11.20

Hit It A Bomb is the sixth European horse to win the Juvenile Turf in its nine years, according to the NBC Sports telecast.

The race was all Manhattan Dan, who started from the No. 3 position and bounded out of the gates to take a solid lead. He's known for his big starts, and it showed Friday.

In fact, Hit It A Bomb was near the back of the pack to start.

At the Races has the replay of the homestretch:

Manhattan Dan held the lead for three quarters of the race, leading by as many as 3.5 lengths, but in the final stretch, he quickly faded, and the trio of Hit A Bomb, Airoforce and Birchwood blew by him. He finished in seventh.

There was also some NHL connections in this race, as Ray's the Bar, owned by former Chicago Blackhawk and current NBC Sports analyst Eddie Olczyk, finished 11th on the day.

Regardless, the first race of the day provided a flying, dramatic start to Friday.

Las Vegas Dirt Mile

Going into the race, there was some surprise that Liam's Map was not running for Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic. Instead he took the field for Friday's Las Vegas Dirt Mile as the overwhelming favorite. He didn't disappoint, winning the race in the home-stretch.

Here are the prize-money payouts for another $1 million mile:

1Liam's Map$3.00$2.40$2.10
2Lea$4.20$3.00
3Red Vine$3.40

Liam's Map was in trouble to start the race. Out of the gates, he hesitated for just a second and was stuck in the middle of the pack throughout the first half mile of the race.

As Bradester and Mr. Z flip-flopped leads, Liam's Map was caught in traffic, unable to get through a wall of horses. Then the pack hit the final turn and Liam's Map was able to get to the outside as At The Races Shows:

It was a dominant performance on the home stretch as Liam's Map simply turned on the jets to complete the victory. With that kind of display, now horse racing fans can only wonder what could have been if he was competing in the main event on Saturday.

Juvenile Fillies Turf

Catch A Glimpse wins her third straight race on turf as she was able to overcome Ruby Notion on the final turn for the win.

Here are the prize-money payouts for a $1 million turf mile:

1Catch A Glimpse$14.80$7.00$5.80
2Alice Springs$5.80$4.80
3Nemoralia$9.20

It was a two-horse race from the start as Ruby Notion jumped out to an early lead, bullying her way to the inside. The move forced Catch A Glimpse to fall back for a moment as she looked spooked, throwing her head up.

But jockey Florent Geroux did a wonderful job to relax her and allow her to remount an attack for the lead, staying with Ruby Notion.

Though the pack managed to gain a bit of ground on the two, Catch A Glimpse wasn't backing down, showing extreme comfort on the outside as she was able to get past Ruby Notion on the home stretch.

She had to hold off the race's favorite, Alice Springs, who made the final few strides a bit more interesting in an impressive showing in her first race in the United States. At The Races shows the race's final moments:

Catch A Glimpse gives trainer Mark Casse his first win at the Breeders' Cup. He was winless in his first 25 races at the world championships.

Longines Distaff

StopChargingMaria won a wild Longines Distaff on Tuesday to end the day's races. Ridden by Javier Castellano, it was the second win of the day for him as he was the jockey for Liam's Map.

Here is a look at the prize-money payouts for the 1 1/8 miles race from the main track:

PlaceHorseWinPlaceShow
1StopChargingMaria$16.20$8.40$6.00
2Stellar Wind$9.20$6.60
3Curalina$7.00

StopChargingMaria was running in the middle of the group as the race progressed as she and Stellar Wind were attempting to make a move on the outside.

A very crowded pack stayed close together throughout the race and were five-aside turning down the home stretch. That is when the two horses on the outside made their moves with a little bit of controversy.

At The Races has the replay:

With StopChargingMaria and Stellar Wind on the outside vying for the lead, the winner seemed to drift more outside, making contact with Stellar Wind. It wasn't heavy contact and after review, the win was upheld.

It was a fantastic way to end the first day at the Breeders' Cup and a perfect appetizer for tomorrow's nine races which includes the last race of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah's career.
