Michigan State Announces $50 Million Breslin Center Renovation

Adam WellsOct 30, 2015

Michigan State's men's and women's home basketball venue is about to get a massive face-lift thanks to the school's board of trustees.

According to Matt Charboneau of the Detroit News, the board of trustees approved a $50 million renovation plan for the Breslin Center that is expected to be completed in the summer of 2018: "At the project's center is the construction of a 26,000-square-foot addition that will house the MSU Basketball Hall of History. Located on the southeast side of the Breslin Center, the hall will highlight team and individual accomplishments of the men's and women's basketball programs."

Per Charboneau's report, other renovations that will take place include a new strength and conditioning center that will be named after former Michigan State star and current Golden State Warriors standout Draymond Green, as well as improving concession areas and other customer amenities.

Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told Charboneau that the main objective of the renovation is to improve the student-athlete facilities and the overall fan experience:

"

The opportunity to be involved with a facility project that has a positive and direct impact on our student-athletes and the entire university community is exciting. While the Breslin Center project addresses a number of issues related to the building's operations, it will greatly enhance the experience for those attending any of its events.

"

The Breslin Center, which opened in 1989, has received many smaller renovations and upgrades in recent years, including a new floor for the basketball court and an overhead scoreboard.

Michigan State's men's basketball program has been one of the best in the nation for nearly two decades, reaching the NCAA tournament every year since 1998 and winning a national title in 2000. The women's program made the tournament in six consecutive seasons before last year.

Given the size and the prominence of the Spartans' basketball program, a major renovation for their facilities seemed inevitable. Now, the Breslin Center's quality will soon match the teams head coaches Tom Izzo and Suzy Merchant put on the court every year.
