Cameron Wake Injury Update: Dolphins DE Diagnosed with Torn Achilles

Mike ChiariOct 30, 2015

Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake left Thursday night's game against the New England Patriots with an Achilles injury, and the 33-year-old veteran won't take the field again for the Dolphins in 2015.

The Dolphins announced the news on Friday, via Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald was first to report the news.

Although Miami fell 36-7 to the Pats, Wake was a huge part of the Dolphins' resurgence in the previous two weeks, as he was great at getting to the quarterback, per ESPN Stats & Info:

When asked about the possibility of Wake's missing the remainder of the season following Thursday's game, head coach Dan Campbell stressed how big of a loss it would be, according to ESPN.com's James Walker: "I would feel horrible, and I know his teammates would, too, if that's the case. ... If you lost a guy like Cam, it would hurt. Not only is he a leader, but he's a very productive player."

Wake has registered 70 sacks over the course of his seven-year NFL career, and he has been named to the Pro Bowl four times, including each of the past three seasons.

He was supposed to be a key part of one of the league's most talented defensive fronts along with free-agent addition Ndamukong Suh, but the 3-4 Dolphins must now search for other options.

Olivier Vernon will continue to hold down the other defensive end spot, but Miami is lacking in terms of depth, as Derrick Shelby and Terrence Fede are the likeliest candidates to replace Wake.

The Dolphins were already facing an uphill climb when it came to contending in the AFC, but with their best pass-rusher suddenly out of the equation, their playoff chances are fading quickly.
