McCown Pegged Starter After TMZ Video of Manziel Surfaces
Tuesday, Nov. 24
Browns head coach Mike Pettine said McCown is cleared and ready to play in Week 12, per Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer. McCown will replace Johnny Manziel as the starter after Manziel was demoted to third string after a video surfaced from TMZ reportedly showing Manziel partying during the team's bye week.
McCown's Solid Stats Not Equaling Wins For Browns
Pettine turned to McCown as his starting quarterback over Manziel at the beginning of the season, and while McCown turned in some strong statistical performances along the way, it didn't translate to success in the win column.
McCown had 1,686 passing yards entering Week 8. However, Cleveland posted a record of just 1-6 in games he appeared in.
Further, McCown struggled to stay on the field at times. A concussion caused him to miss the team's Week 2 victory over the Tennessee Titans, and he was also forced to leave the team's Week 7 game against the St. Louis Rams early because of a shoulder injury.
Despite the fact that injuries have accumulated for McCown, it may not be fair to label him injury-prone since some have been of the fluky variety, as seen in this video courtesy of the NFL's official Twitter account:
At the same time, McCown isn't a particularly mobile quarterback, which meant that much of the responsibility for keeping him healthy rested on the offensive line.
Browns guard Joel Bitonio recently stressed the importance of keeping McCown upright, despite his penchant for shaking off big hits, per Scott Petrak of the Medina Gazette.
"He's a tough guy, he comes back swinging. Every week you think he's going to be down for the count and it seems like he's ready to go on Wednesday," Bitonio said. "That's going to be our job, as a whole offense we've got to make sure we keep him on his feet. You can only take so many hits before it wears you out."
With Manziel's off the field issues cropping up again, it's up to McCown to right the sinking ship that is the Browns.
