Twitter Reacts as Arsenal and Chelsea Crash out of the Capital One Cup

Tom WebbOct 27, 2015

Arsenal and Chelsea went into their Capital One Cup fourth-round fixtures in dramatically contrasting periods of form, the Gunners protecting a 100 percent record in October while the Blues sit 15th in the Premier League and with pressure mounting on under-fire boss Jose Mourinho.

The night got off to a bad start for Arsenal when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain limped off within the first five minutes before his replacement Theo Walcott followed him to the treatment table soon after:

"

Will ALL the Arsenal players get injured tonight?

Arsenal trailed Sheffield Wednesday of the Championship, exactly one week after beating the mighty Bayern Munich in the Champions League:

The two kits on display were also getting some attention:

"

Into the second half and the hole in which Arsenal found themselves got considerably deeper:

Chelsea, too, looked down and out, before substitute Loic Remy snatched a late equaliser to take the game to extra time:

"

THAT IS A MASSIVE GOAL.

Chelsea strove for the winner in extra time, but the game was to be decided by a penalty shootout, the significance of which far outstretched its Capital Cup fourth-round status:

"

it's going to pens...not quite Munich level of importance, but huge for Mourinho

— Simon Johnson (@sjstandardsport) October 27, 2015"

And it was a shoot-out that went the way of the hosts, consigning Chelsea to another excruciating defeat:

But the night belonged to Sheffield Wednesday, who made it through to the fifth round courtesy of an emphatic 3-0 win over Arsenal.
