South Eastern Conference Pretenders Third Edition
Another wonderful week of football for SEC fans. Florida found a defense that challenged their capabilities. Alabama watched their quarterback become a strong point. There is more to this week than meets the casual eye.
Before we get into pretenders a look at some developments might give us some perspective. Tennessee found a way to make Florida's vaunted offense look awkward. Tennessee is unlikely to be one of the five best SEC defenses this season. This puts Florida into that can be picked off position. Mississippi State showed us the SEC West is deep top to bottom and clearly superior this year to the SEC East. Arkansas showed without a doubt that they have absolutely no defense nor any hope that one will show up. South Carolina continues to struggle, it seems this team just will not gel. Auburn proved their defense has forgotten the fundamentals of defensive football. This weekend was the first time I have witnessed an Auburn defense looking lost on a football field in quite some time.
Pretenders Western Division
Ole Miss's performance this weekend did not impress me one bit. They put in a 5/11 third down performance on directional Louisiana. Gave up 300 yards and two turn overs and lost the time of possession battle. I see no reason in this game to change my mind about Ole Miss being the number one pretender in the SEC West.
Alabama played a flawless game against cupcake university.
LSU has not been on the field with a defense this season and that trend did not change this week.
Ole Miss keeps the number one pretender spot.
Auburn was made to look inept on both offense and defense at times. The defense allowed more than 400 yards. They get Auburn the title of Second place pretenders in the SEC West this week.
Arkansas proved beyond a shadow of doubt that there is no defense on their team.
Mississippi State looked good in their win over Vandy.
I am moving South Carolina out of the top pretender spot in the SEC East. I feel that Tennessee has reserved a special right to this title with their failure to be aggressive and win against Florida. When you defense holds the defending National Champions to peanuts on offense, you have to try and win the game!! Did Tennessee hire the wrong Kiffin? The father held up his end of the bargain, where is the son?
South Carolina continues to have offensive woes.
Georgia has either fired all of their defensive players or left them in Athens this weekend.
Kentucky let a mediocre Louisville hang around too long.
Vanderbilt was beaten thoroughly by Mississippi State.
