Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis, Anquan Boldin Post-Week 7 Fantasy Advice

Scott PolacekOct 22, 2015

Perhaps the only ones who enjoyed Thursday’s performance from the San Francisco 49ers against the Seattle Seahawks less than 49ers fans were the fantasy owners relying on the team’s passing attack.

The Legion of Boom lived up to its nickname in Week 7 in a 20-3 win after two consecutive second-half collapses, and Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis and Anquan Boldin suffered in the box score as a result.

Here is a look at their final tallies, as well as some reaction for each.

Colin Kaepernick

13-of-24124000004.96

If you like roller-coaster rides, then put Kaepernick into your lineup on a weekly basis.

The San Francisco quarterback combined for 937 passing yards, 84 rushing yards and six total touchdowns in Weeks 2, 5 and 6. He combined for 392 passing yards, 144 rushing yards, one total touchdown and five interceptions in Weeks 1, 3 and 4.

Fantasy owners saw the disappointing version of Kaepernick again Thursday in Week 7.

There is no question the 49ers signal-caller is one of the best running quarterbacks in the league, which gives him automatic fantasy value (although he didn't show that against the Seahawks). However, the consistency issues are too severe to ignore and enough to leave fantasy owners frustrated over the course of a long season.

He is worth a start if your normal quarterback has a bye or is dealing with injuries, but that is it at this point.

Vernon Davis

461066.1

Perhaps Davis’ days as a superstar tight end are over now that he is 31 years old with his prime in the rearview mirror.

He still doesn’t have a touchdown catch this season, and he hasn’t tallied more than 62 receiving yards in a single game. What’s more, there are health concerns (he's already missed two games with a knee injury), and his season-high mark in targets in one game is seven.

He just isn’t as involved in the offense for the second straight year (245 receiving yards and two touchdowns in 2014) as he was in 2013 when he tallied 850 receiving yards and 13 scores.

If he didn’t put up big fantasy numbers against a Seattle defense that Football Outsiders ranked an abysmal 31st against tight ends through Week 6, it is hard to see where the production will come from the rest of the season. Davis deserves some benefit of the doubt for an impressive career, but he isn’t the same fantasy force he was in his prime.

Anquan Boldin

339073.9

While Davis may be past his prime, Boldin visited the fountain of youth the past two weeks with consecutive 100-yard performances in the San Francisco offense. Perhaps more importantly for fantasy purposes, he was targeted a combined 21 times in Weeks 5 and 6.

Those numbers weren’t there Thursday, but Boldin was still targeted a team-high seven times against the Seahawks. Kaepernick continues to look his way, which is exactly what fantasy owners need to hear if they are going to trust the 35-year-old pass-catcher.

Boldin has been very boom-or-bust this year with three double-digit fantasy point performances (per NFL.com standard scoring) and four performances with fewer than four points.

However, he leads the 49ers by 27 targets over the next-closest competitor. That alone makes him worthy of flex consideration, especially since he topped 1,000 receiving yards the last two years and seven times in his career.
