Chapman's Game-Saving Play 😱

The Sunday Morning BCS Report: Week 3

Dan SmithSep 20, 2009

It was a day of reckoning. Some of the teams escaped while others fell victim to eerily similar fates.

An overthrown pass by Kirk Cousins, the quarterback from Michigan State, saved Charlie Weis's job at Notre Dame.

Another pick by Kyle McCarthy helped. I would say that you can't count on it all year but he has three picks in three games.

Texas and Florida both took revenge games. Texas had a literal revenge game since it was Texas Tech that started the quagmire that took the Longhorns out of the championship game they belonged in last year.

Florida has won five straight over Tennessee so this was revenge from what Lane Kiffin said about Florida and Urban Meyer in the offseason. The game was not as close as the score indicated but the Volunteers did make it look respectable as Florida found out that there is still some talent close to theirs in the SEC.

They held Tim Tebow in check. He only had one touchdown and actually had some turnovers while still playing an amazing game.

USC and BYU both lost to unranked teams that were once powers in Washington and Florida State. BYU is out of the BCS picture now. Boise State and TCU are both undefeated still.

Utah's 16 game winning streak came to an end so their act as BCS buster will have to wait until next year.

There is only a one game playoff in the BCS (No. 1 vs. No. 2 in the BCS Championship Game) so every game in the regular season for potential BCS busters is a playoff game. That is a flaw in the system but it is still a part of the system.

USC's loss in Seattle means that one of my picks to go undefeated is now, in fact, defeated. Texas and Florida now both control their own destinies. If they both win out then they will play for the championship. Alabama, Ole' Miss, Cal (Jahvid Best was amazing himself), and LSU are all hoping one of them lose so they can break into my, er, the top two.

Boise State is high enough right now, with their schedule, that they might be able to find their way into a top two position if everyone else loses. In 2007, LSU won a championship with two losses (and that hadn't happened since 1960 when Minnesota did it) so an undefeated Boise State might just have enough to go from ten to two.

The biggest flaw with the BCS is the parity that exists in college football now. For example, a lower tier team in the Pac-10 beat USC, again.

It seems to happen every year.
