Game of the Week
New York Jets at New England Patriots
Think the Jets-Patriots rivalry lost any sizzle when Rex Ryan left his post in New York? It's only seemed to pick up steam in the months since, setting up a mouth-watering Week 7 showdown.
New head coach Todd Bowles has brought his defensive stigma to the Big Apple, where the Jets defense is suffocating opponents with standout secondary play and a boisterous front seven. That has led them to a surprising 4-1 start to the season.
But those types of defenses tend to only bring out the best in Tom Brady, Kimberly Jones of NFL Network observed:
With that in mind, there are some other key advantages going the Jets' way that should offer a new wrinkle to this rivalry. Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is in his second stint with the team, but it's his first since winning the Super Bowl with New England last season.
Brady is undoubtedly wary of what Revis knows, per Phil Perry of CSNNE.com: "He’s got, obviously, an intimate knowledge of how we do things, and kind of the skill set of our players and our formations, and vice versa."
These Jets players who are finally turning the corner and playing playoff-worthy football will be intent on proving something to the team that has run the AFC East for many years. There's nothing that amps Jets players up more than playing the mighty Pats, per ESPN.com's Rich Cimini:
"He's (Brady's) run this division for a while so I am kind of happy we get next," Richardson said. "We're getting after it. I mean, they are the Super Bowl champions. Just leave it at that. You know, licking our chops."
Behind a rekindled offense led by Chris Ivory and Brandon Marshall, New York will take it to a worsened Pats defense and make this a close one.
But there's no stopping Brady and these Patriots at the moment. The Jets will keep it within the spread, but both teams' offensive proficiency will have this one surpassing the over.
Prediction: Patriots 31, Jets 24
