Gennady Golovkin Is Biggest Fight for Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez, Says Promoter
Fight promoter Tom Loeffler believes that following Floyd Mayweather Jr's retirement from boxing, Gennady Golovkin is the biggest opponent Miguel Cotto or Saul "Canelo" Alvarez can face.
Speaking to Victor Salazar of BoxingScene.com, Loeffler—the managing director of K2 Promotions, with whom GGG is signed—said:
"The fight will happen in 2016, whether it be the spring or summer. But the winner could easily say I don't want to fight. It's clearly the biggest fight for either fighter now that Floyd isn't in the sport. The winner of that fight will certainly jump to the top in terms of business. Fighting someone like Gennady will only be a bigger fight for the winner too.
"
Cotto will defend his WBC welterweight title against Alvarez in November, and as Salazar notes, the winner must step into the ring with Golovkin or their belt will be handed to the Kazakh by default.
Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix doesn't believe that to be a likely scenario, however:
Indeed, Mannix revealed the early pay-per-view numbers from Golovkin's victory over David Lemieux and believes it to be a respectable total:
That being the case, and more importantly, with the winner of Cotto vs. Alvarez almost certain to be fully committed to defending their title, it's virtually inconceivable one of them won't face Golovkin—barring unforeseen circumstances such as an injury.
As ESPN's Dan Rafael notes, Triple G is certainly eager to make the fight happen at any rate:
The 33-year-old's eighth-round victory over Lemieux saw him move to 34 matches unbeaten and extend his consecutive run of knockouts to a stunning 21.
Rafael is among many in awe of Golovkin's considerable power:
Regardless of who comes out on top, both Cotto and Alvarez boast impressive records of their own, so the prospect of the winner of their fight facing GGG is a mouthwatering one indeed.
Expect the victor to confirm they'll step into the ring with Golovkin as early as the post-fight press conference.
