Why the Ravens can cover the spread

Baltimore is a much better team than its record shows right now, with all five losses decided by six points or less, including last week’s 25-20 road defeat to the San Francisco 49ers. The fact that the Ravens were 2.5-point favorites against the 49ers shows how much respect oddsmakers still have for them despite their poor start.

The lone victory for Baltimore this year also came in prime time on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, and the Ravens have been favored in all but one game so far, their season-opening loss at the Denver Broncos.

While they are solid road underdogs again here, head coach John Harbaugh and quarterback Joe Flacco seem to thrive in these situations with a 4-1 mark against the spread in their past five as dogs.

Why the Cardinals can cover the spread

Despite falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, Arizona has proven to bounce back well under head coach Bruce Arians with a 7-3 mark straight up in its past 10 games following a loss. Arians is a tremendous coach and simply could not find a way to score touchdowns at Pittsburgh, as the Cardinals put up great offensive numbers otherwise.

Baltimore’s defense has been the culprit behind the team’s disappointing start, and rightfully so. The Ravens just gave up a season-high 340 passing yards and two touchdowns to San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick, who looked like a Pro Bowler at times. Arizona’s Carson Palmer must be licking his chops to face them after throwing for a season-high 421 yards in the loss to the Steelers.

Smart pick

It’s hard to argue with Baltimore’s success on Monday night and as an underdog recently with Harbaugh and Flacco. But the Ravens have serious flaws defensively and will not be able to stop the high-scoring offense of the Cardinals. Look for Arizona to get up big early and run away from the Ravens in an easy victory by double digits.

Betting trends

The Cardinals are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games at home.

The Ravens are 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games on the road in October.
