Why the Seahawks can cover the spread
Seattle has enjoyed a huge mental edge over San Francisco since winning the 2014 NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks went on to win the Super Bowl that year, while the 49ers have never been the same since, failing to make the playoffs last season and losing head coach Jim Harbaugh to the Michigan Wolverines.
Even in Seattle’s two most recent losses in the series, the team covered the spread at San Francisco and knows how to defend 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick well. While Kaepernick has played much better in the last two games, he will be facing a Seahawks defense that will be fired up following two straight losses.
Why the 49ers can cover the spread
San Francisco’s offense has turned things around, averaging 26 points over the past two games to help cover the spread in both. The 49ers had previously totaled only 10 points in losses to the Arizona Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers, with Kaepernick finishing with more passing yards last week against the Baltimore Ravens than in both of those games combined. They have also earned their two wins at home, while the Seahawks are 0-3 on the road.
Seattle has struggled offensively lately, but the bigger concern is the team’s defense. The Seahawks have surrendered 27 points in consecutive weeks after giving up just 10 in their previous two games. Of course, those two games came at home and resulted in their only two wins this year against the Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions.
Smart pick
Seattle has played its best in divisional games, going 5-1 SU and ATS in the last six versus NFC West foes. The Seahawks still have a shot to win the division despite the hot start from the Arizona Cardinals, but they must get a victory here on the road. They are 12-3 SU in their last 15 games as favorites and 10-4 SU in their past 14 following a loss, so look for another Seattle win and cover over San Francisco in this spot.
Betting trends
- The Seahawks are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games against the 49ers.
- The total has gone under in eight of the 49ers' last 10 games at home.
- The 49ers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games in October.
